On Wednesday, Hippo were pleased to welcome the Minister of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, Sir Chris Bryant, to our Hippocampus for the launch of Labour Digital North. The organisation’s focus is on harnessing technology and its potential to secure economic growth and opportunities in the North.

What Labour Digital North is all about

Labour Digital, the parent organisation, states its vision is to explore how technology can advance our country, promote its use in the economy and public services, and advocate for smart regulations that protect citizens from potential risks.

Labour Digital North aims to bridge the gap between the tech world and the political sphere, focusing on three key areas:

  • Supporting local tech startups: Offering funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities to help emerging companies grow.
  • Advocating for digital skills training: Promoting programs to equip people with the necessary skills for the digital economy.
  • Lobbying for tech-friendly policies: Collaborating with policymakers to create an environment where tech businesses can thrive.

A night of innovation and collaboration

Hippo’s very own Ed Thewlis kicked things off, setting the tone for the evening with an introduction that captured the essence of why initiatives that support the North’s technology ecosystem are vital to the region’s growth. The event brought together a diverse group, ranging from tech startups to established industry leaders – a vibrant mix where ideas could be shared.

Delivering a keynote talk, Sir Chris Bryant emphasised the importance of investing in digital infrastructure and fostering a skilled workforce, highlighting how these pillars are crucial for driving economic growth.

Why this matters for Leeds

Leeds has a well-established tech ecosystem, and linking in with initiatives like Labour Digital North can help to drive growth and facilitate innovation. This collaboration can lead to the development of cutting-edge solutions, create new job opportunities, and address local challenges effectively. By uniting local businesses, innovators, and policymakers, we can work together to shape a future that truly benefits everyone in the region and country.

A bright future for tech in the North

We believe technology has the potential to transform our economy, tackle major challenges like climate change, improve public services and the lives of citizens. But for technology to be a force for good, it needs the right policy environment – one that can be achieved through collaborative initiatives like those outlined at the event.
