Black History Month invites reflection. Across the UK, it celebrates Black history, culture and achievement, while creating space to listen to the stories that shape our shared experience. It’s a time to learn from the past, to recognise progress and to understand what still needs to change.
At Hippo, this month is an opportunity to learn from those stories and to listen more deeply. The theme Standing Firm in Power and Pride speaks to resilience and collective strength. A reminder of the importance of both reflection and action, within our communities and within ourselves.
Throughout October, Hippos will have opportunities to take part in conversations and events that focus on awareness, allyship and connection. Each one offers space to listen, to learn and to take part in something much bigger than our own experience.
Listening and belonging
The conversations that take place during Black History Month often echo the values already present across Hippo – inclusion, openness and respect. Much of that learning happens in small, honest moments. It takes shape in conversations between colleagues, through our Communities of Belonging and within the Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Forum.
These spaces give people a chance to share experiences, challenge assumptions and build understanding together. One forum member describes DI&B as “amplifying perspectives and stories so far untold.” That idea sits at the heart of this month, learning through listening and recognising the power of shared experience.
Understanding social value
Black History Month also connects to the idea of social value, the belief that awareness, empathy and inclusion can improve the way services are designed and delivered. Listening to a range of experiences helps shape the work we do, the partnerships we build and the communities we serve.
Taking time to understand different perspectives allows for better decisions and more inclusive outcomes. The awareness encouraged by this month reminds us why empathy and curiosity are essential to meaningful design and collaboration.
Continuing the conversation
Inclusion is never a fixed goal. It grows through small steps, through reflection and through listening to others. The conversations happening this October are one part of that ongoing process and something that doesn’t stop when the month ends.
The events taking place throughout October are open invitations to join in, learn and reflect.
