Following a gala dinner at The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane, the UK eCommerce Awards 2023 were announced, with Hippo customer, Virgin Trains Ticketing, clinching the coveted title of ‘App of the Year’. The accolade provides recognition of the remarkable success by the rail retail platform, having launched just 16 months ago.
The judging panel, composed of industry experts drawn from diverse sectors of the business world, commended the app for its creativity, branding, and overall quality. They specifically highlighted the team’s ability to make significant, well-executed decisions when confronted with challenges. The seamless integration of branding and the app’s array of highly beneficial products contributed to the prestigious award.
Virgin Trains Ticketing stands out in the crowded field of travel apps by offering passengers a platform to book train tickets across Great Britain with an array of benefits. Users earn three Virgin Points for every pound spent on the app, which can be redeemed for discounts on future train travel. The platform distinguishes itself by selling tickets without booking fees, providing split ticket options, and featuring a cheap fare finder that identifies cost-effective alternatives for the same journey.
Mark Plowright, the Director of Virgin Trains Ticketing, expressed his delight at the award, stating, “Our mission is simple: to make train travel easier and more affordable for our customers, so it’s an amazing achievement to be recognized for our hard work and brilliant product. What an accolade after launching just 16 months ago!”
Plowright acknowledged the support of Hippo, whose invaluable expertise, including engineering, played a crucial role in the platform’s success over the past year, success that includes a 130% increase in revenue, 140% increase in bookings and 130% increase in new customer acquisitions.
From a consumer perspective, the ‘App of the Year’ accolade stands as a testament to Virgin Trains Ticketing’s commitment to making rail travel more accessible and affordable, setting a high standard for innovation and quality in the e-commerce landscape.
This accolade not only celebrates the app’s excellence but also highlights the positive impact and innovation emerging from independent rail retailers. In an industry facing challenges, this recognition underscores the significant contributions of the private sector in driving growth in rail travel.
As Plowright aptly puts it, “Onwards and upward”.For more information about the App and Hippo’s role in its success, read our recent case study.
