What led to you becoming a Hippo?
As a result of covid, I went to work for a little-known delivery company called Hermes (or should I say Evri), where I was leading their talent acquisition strategy and team. But, having worked for a number of large, global companies in corporate environments for over 20 years, I was really keen on a change, and I noticed Hippo was recruiting.
I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of a growing business where I could make a real impact and challenge myself to work in a very different environment. It was the best career decision I have made in years.
What does your day-to-day involve?
The role, not surprisingly, is very people-oriented and is focused on supporting the growth of the business through the hiring of new talent, which is not as easy as it sounds and can bring with it many challenges. A lot of the work can be pre-planned, but working in a consultancy environment, the team and I are always prepared for the unexpected and need to be ready to pivot quickly to meet new demands.
There is a lot of headhunting activity, identifying talent for current and future opportunities, speaking with candidates, liaising with Mike Tattersall, our service and delivery Director and the three Portfolio Directors, over hiring needs and organising interviews. Also working with our agency, advertising and ATS suppliers, supporting the team, reporting and developing plans for upcoming projects.
I have worked in talent acquisition now for 20 +years and have enjoyed being involved in the evolution from what was seen as an administrative role to now being recognised as a strategic part of the business.
What are you most proud of since working here?
There are lots of things that make me proud.
My first project was the implementation of a new applicant tracking system (ATS), Eploy, an end-to-end recruitment system enabling the TA team and wider business to manage the process through one system. When I joined, we had an ATS in place, but it required heavy investment for it to be fit for purpose.
Having explored the market, we now have a cost-effective, future-proof ATS. That, as we grow and become more complex, has the features and capability to help us to achieve our goals. In addition, we can now report on every aspect of what we do, demonstrating ROI, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and talent pooling in support of the growth agenda.
In 2022/23, so far, the team has achieved 65% direct hire, which is amazing for a company of our size. This is down to a talented team with Alex, James and Phil, but also working with the right tools as an enabler for success.
For the 1st academy a year ago, we hired 27 new consultants across design, delivery, product and BA. It involved a lot of people from across the business, a lot of hours reviewing CVs, speaking to candidates, organising interviews etc. Still, we hired over and above the initial target, which resulted in a great success story for the company. We did this while continuing our BAU, which was a massive triumph for the TA team.
What do you like best about Hippo?
What I like about hippo digital is the people and the culture. We know that consultancy life can be tough and fast-paced, we don't always have a plan, but we'll work hard together as a team to get to where we need to be. There is a lot of passion, talent, goodwill and effort from a lot of people focused on doing the right thing, and with that, we can achieve anything.
And finally, what's your favourite way to eat a potato?
Eating a potato... REALLY?! It's fair to say I've never been asked THAT before… mashed or roasted for me (and chips...obvs!)
