What led to you becoming a Hippo?
I started off working in small digital agencies, companies and start-ups. Over time I wanted to work at big brands as I assumed things were “better” due to their company size and growth since I’ve worked with brands but only as a third party. Boy, was I wrong! It’s not the same for all big brands, but from my collective experience, it’s just like any other companies I’ve worked for but at a bigger scale. I’m a big fan of the KISS principle (keep it super simple).
So that’s when I thought I’ll give consultancy a go.
In my past jobs, what I enjoyed the most out of them was problem-solving. Not all problems can be solved, but there may be better solutions to make things easier in people’s lives. Whether it’s reducing a 4-hour process to 4 seconds, automating manual processes or creating reusable templates to reduce starting from scratch, there’s always room for improvement.
The major difference between a consultancy and an agency is as an agency, you work for the client, whereas a consultancy works with them.
Knowing that Hippo has done some amazing work for the public and private sectors, I knew I would love to contribute too.
What does your day-to-day involve?
As a principal consultant, I wear many hats. I line-manage seven awesome Hippos. I’m part of the engineering & data committee, organising meetups, scheduling Lunch & Learns and doing some myself. Support recruitment for all things front-end development and also coding internally as well as for clients.
I can’t be serious for 8 hours straight, so within the Hippo community, I tend to share;

• Anything that’s worth a chuckle
What are you most proud of since working here?
In my one year at Hippo, I’ve worked on three projects, and out of those, I’m most proud of the one where I was brought in to build the UI for a data hub with the ability to read and write data.
Based on their existing manual processes, we felt they required User Research to enhance their workflow and provide them with the digital solution “they had asked for”. Upon successful delivery, the client was delighted as we exceeded their expectations which led to Hippo extending our services by getting user researchers onboard. This shows the benefits of having a consultancy help you rather than an agency. What do you like best about Hippo?
I am heard at Hippo. In the past, when I raised business concerns or suggested improvements, I was always met with, “It’s the nature of the beast”, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Whereas here, I am empowered to make changes for the better of all.
And finally, what’s your favourite way to eat a potato?
Roasted, turned into fries or hash browns.
