Heuristic analysis

Analysis of a system against a set of usability heuristics such as Nielsen’s 10 Heuristics for User Interface Design or Weinschenk and Baker’s categorisation of heuristics and guidelines, by a number of analysts who have some knowledge of usability and it’s application.

To quickly assess the usability of an existing system before more detailed research is undertaken.

  1. Agree the heuristics to be assessed, any relative weightings to be used and the scale against which scores should be recorded.
  2. Chose to allow assessors to analyse the system using exploratory testing, or set specific tasks to be completed.
  3. Specify how observations and supporting evidence should be recorded (scores in isolation of supporting evidence are of limited use).
  4. Following assessment, compile and present finding to the team.
