Analysis of a system against a set of usability heuristics such as Nielsen’s 10 Heuristics for User Interface Design or Weinschenk and Baker’s categorisation of heuristics and guidelines, by a number of analysts who have some knowledge of usability and it’s application.
To quickly assess the usability of an existing system before more detailed research is undertaken.
- Agree the heuristics to be assessed, any relative weightings to be used and the scale against which scores should be recorded.
- Chose to allow assessors to analyse the system using exploratory testing, or set specific tasks to be completed.
- Specify how observations and supporting evidence should be recorded (scores in isolation of supporting evidence are of limited use).
- Following assessment, compile and present finding to the team.
